For that matter, let's have native-born Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, declared atheists and Jews. After all, 41 of 42 presidents have been Protestants.
And we wouldn't even have to monkeywrench the foundational document of our government in order to do it; there are millions of currently eligible candidates in each of those groups.
What WOULD it take to get America to elect an avowed atheist? (No doubt it has had a few closet ones already.) Come to think of it, which countries have elected an open atheist? As I recollect a former Australian governor-general affirmed his honorable intentions rather than taking an oath of the Bible, but that's an appointed position. I don't know what he avowed when he was the leader of the Labor Party. In British and Australian politics there tends to be a don't ask, don't tell policy among journalists on the issue.
